Hardwood Floors
Brockville Wood Products is your local Hardwood Flooring Expert!
Hardwood is an easy way to improve the look, durability and value of your home. Learn more about the types of hardwood flooring and what you should take into consideration when choosing this type of flooring for your home.
Safe & Clean: One of the biggest advantages of hardwood floors is that hardwood flooring is a more sanitary option than other floor types. When thinking about carpet vs. hardwood, a good amount of dust, germs and other debris get absorbed into the carpet fibres. With hardwood floors, there is no place for debris to hide, making for a healthier, safer living environment, especially for allergy suffers.
Low Maintenance: Generally, hardwood floors cost more than carpeted floors, but they also require less maintenance. Because hardwood floors are typically sealed surfaces with a protective layer of finish, wood floors are more stain-resistant than other types of flooring.
One of the benefits of hardwood floors is that they can be repaired and refinished. Hardwood floors do get scraped, scratched, scuffed, dented and damaged – especially in high traffic areas. However, wood flooring can most often simply be sanded, smoothed and refinished. It is rarely necessary to replace a wood floor.
Sustainable: Another advantage of hardwood floors is the environmental factor. Wood flooring is the most abundantly renewable flooring material available. The annual net growth for hardwoods is greater than the average annual removal rate. This means that trees are growing faster than they are being used today.
Wood floors also use less water and energy to produce and can be recycled at the end of their life cycle, making it an extremely sustainable product. Considering the differences in producing carpet vs. hardwood, carpet uses more synthetic materials to product and is treated with more chemicals than hardwood. Also, hardwood not only brings beauty and value to a home, but it truly lasts a lifetime while carpet needs to be replaced on the average every 10-15 years.
Unsurpassed Beauty & Value: Probably the biggest benefit of hardwood is its unique and beautiful look. Hardwood is one of the oldest flooring materials there is, and it never goes out of style. Because of the large variety of trees and wood types, a world of colours, consistencies, designs, and grain patterns are available. Hardwood floors also increase the value of a house. Whereas many new homeowners will remove carpeting when they buy a house, a gorgeous hardwood floor is usually a reason why a house is bought.

Hardwood Categories
Hardwood flooring is an easy choice for your needs. It is suitable for almost every application and environment. Hardwood flooring is divided into three manufactured technologies. All are beautiful, natural options that add value to any home. It’s also impossible to tell them apart… “The wood could have come all from the same tree”. In order to understand the differences between them, you must look below the surface. BWP to help you choose the one that is right for you.

Solid Hardwood – Real hardwood boards manufactured from a single piece of hardwood. Boards are typically ¾” thick and come in a variety of widths. Can be installed above or on grade. Can be professionally sanded 3-5 times over its lifespan. Hypoallergenic finish for a safe environment. Solid can be used in any room above grade that is not prone to moisture or significant humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Engineered Hardwood – A technological masterpiece… Real hardwood top layer with a solid plywood base. Boards come in a variety of thickness and widths. Can be installed anywhere. Can be glued directly to a concrete or wood subfloor and can be stapled or nailed to a wood subfloor… even over a radiant heating system. The floor can be professional sanded 3-4 times over its lifespan. Advantages: Generally available with more selection of widths, grades and textures. More tolerable to moisture and temperature fluctuations. Can be professionally sanded 3-4 times over its lifespan. Hypoallergenic finish for a safe environment.

Engineered Click Hardwood – Real hardwood top layer with a solid high-density fibre core (HDF). Boards typically come in standard thickness and width. Can be floated over any type of subfloor… even over a radiant heating system. Does not get fastened down --- hence the common term “floating floor”. The floor cannot be sanded. Sensitive to moisture and temperature fluctuation, but much less than solid hardwood. Ideal for condos. Hypoallergenic finish for a safe environment.
Hardwood Styles
The “Style” of your hardwood is determined by six factors:
- The Colour – Colour is personal, adding warmth to every decor. That’s why manufacturers offer a whole array of colours. Manufacturers have also learnt how to recreate the rustic appearance of the floors from days gone by… with an aged appearance
- The Species – Each species of wood has a different grain, colour and texture. Red oak and maple are the best known and most popular species, followed by yellow birch, white oak, hickory and walnut. Some customers are attracted to the added warmth and richness of exotic species such as Brazilian cherry, African mahogany or sapele. Personal taste and preference lead us to choose one species over another. Your room décor and your desired effect will influence your decision.
- The Grade – Grading is a means of rating boards according to variations in the wood’s natural colour. Most manufacturers offer multiple grades to categorize their hardwood. These rate from extremely uniform grades to those with a rustic feel with more pronounced natural colour, texture and variation.Wood Species
- The Texture --- Explore a range of surface textures that will complement your taste and style. Smooth ? Wire-Brushed ? Hand-Scraped
- The Finish – Provides protection and durability to floors, as well as sheen. Not all finishes are considered equal. The most important part of the finish is its quality. At BWP we are proud to represent Canadian manufacturers that only use quality finishes. The Finish typically is available in four levels of sheen: matte, satin, semi-gloss, gloss (from least shiny to most shiny). The sheen measures how shiny or glossy the floor’s finish is. Different people have different preferences. Keep in mind that the glossier the sheen, the more light will reflect off the floor. This, in turn, shows more dirt, dust as well as imperfections in the floor. What if you don’t like the sheen after the floor has been installed? The good news is that we can usually do a screen and recoat to change the sheen level of your floor. Refer to Services Floor Finishing.

Wood Grades
Hardwood comes in a variety of grades. For simplicity, we have chosen to explain the three most common grades of wood and their characteristics. These are:
Premium Grade – This grade of wood is made from boards with the most uniform colour and grain. This is the highest quality grade with little or no imperfections & longest board lengths on average. ![]() Hard Maple / Natural / Smooth / Premier |
Select Grade – This grade of wood is made from boards with fairly uniform colour and grain. This is a high-quality grade with few imperfections and variations and a good board length on average. ![]() Hard Maple / Natural / Smooth / Select |
Heritage Grade – This grade of wood has more colour and grain variation than Premium grade. Board length, on average is shorter and may contain knots and pinholes. Typically less expensive than Premium grade. ![]() Hard Maple / Natural / Wire Brushed / Heritage |
Rustic – This grade of wood tends to have the most colour variations and grain and has an increased chance of containing knots and pinholes. This is the least expensive grade of wood with the shortest average board length of the three grades. ![]() Ash / Fog / Wire Brushed / Rustic |
